Project background
Years ago a server lost some important data because the hard disk had no more spare sectors to
reallocate bad ones. That hard disk supported S.M.A.R.T. and information about available spare
sectors were available, but nobody took advantage of it. Thanks to the S.M.A.R.T. technology,
when the hard disk on the new server started showing pending sectors it was possible to move
the data to a new storage device and replace the hard disk with a new one. Newer servers, that
use RAID setups, can now have their about to fail hard disks replaced with no or very little
downtime. If the right tool is used!
The power of crowd knowledge
A lot of users share the same hard disk model. HddStatus builds advanced models by comparing
multiple real hard disks from all over the World and uses them to identify problems before
they become more serious.
